UFC 322: Della Maddalena vs. Makhachev: Prediction

A submission victory for Makhachev over Della Maddalena is my prediction for this fight because his wrestling skills are far superior and currently unstoppable. Furthermore, he won’t be stressing about weight cutting since he’ll move up in the welterweight division.

There’s no doubt that Della Maddalena has improved a lot in his grappling skills. With the help of Craig Jones and Alexander Volkanovski in his camp, he’ll still be able to improve them even more, but Makhachev’s wrestling and grappling are on another level.

Della Maddalena has been taken down in previous fights with Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad, which is why I think there’s no reason why Makhachev won’t be able to do the same, who’s a better grappler than Burns and Muhammad.

Makhachev has also done a great job of using his improved striking skills not only to set up his takedowns but also to inflict damage on his opponents, as seen in his recent matches against Dustin Poirier and Volkanovski.

So in this classic matchup between a striker (Della Maddalena) and a grappler (Makhachev), the latter will be triumphant against the former, thus crowning a new titleholder in the 170-pound weight class and starting a new era.

Jack Della Maddalena’s Recent Fight Results

Della Maddalena was the Eternal MMA champion when he joined Dana White’s Contender Series in September 2021. He had an impressive performance against Ange Loosa and scored a unanimous decision victory to secure a roster spot in the UFC.

He faced Pete Rodriguez in his promotional debut in January 2022, knocking him out in the opening round. Since then, he has had a six-fight win streak, including victories over Ramazan Emeev, Danny Roberts, Randy Brown, Bassil Hafez, Kevin Holland, and Gilbert Burns.

That undefeated streak earned him a shot at UFC gold, as he challenged Belal Muhammad in the main event of UFC 315 last May. Della Maddalena did enough in the fight with Muhammad to persuade the judges to give him the unanimous decision victory.

Islam Makhachev’s Recent Fight Results

Makhachev was an undefeated prospect when he was signed by the UFC in 2015. He made his octagon debut against Leo Kuntz and submitted him in the second round. However, in his second bout in the UFC, he was TKO’d by Adriano Martins.

Following that setback, he went on to win his next nine bouts and won against Chris Wade, Nik Lentz, Gleison Tibau, Kajan Johnson, Arman Tsarukyan, Davi Ramos, Drew Dober, Thiago Moises, Dan Hooker, and King Green to earn a shot at UFC lightweight gold.

Makhachev fought Charles Oliveira in October 2022 at UFC 280 and scored a second-round submission win to become the undisputed lightweight king. He successfully defended the belt four times with wins over Volkanovski (twice), Dustin Poirier, and Renato Moicano.
