West Ham vs Chelsea Prediction, Odds & Match Preview

See the latest EPL odds, picks, and predictions for Chelsea vs West Ham ahead of their matchup on August 22.
  • West Ham is predicted to be a +0.5-goal home underdog against Chelsea.
  • Chelsea finished 2-0 SU against West Ham United last season.
  • My West Ham vs Chelsea prediction is the Chelsea Moneyline (-135).

To begin Premier League Matchday 2, West Ham hosts Chelsea in a London derby.

West Ham aims to bounce back at home after a weak performance at Sunderland. As road favorites, Graham Potter’s squad dropped all three points.

Chelsea also produced a lackluster result on Matchday 1. As home favorites to Crystal Palace, Enzo Maresca’s side played to a 0-0 draw.

Check out the Premier League odds and my West Ham vs Chelsea prediction.

Chelsea vs West Ham: Prediction

Based on Chelsea’s success last season against West Ham United and the previous success of road favorites, my West Ham vs Chelsea prediction is the Chelsea Moneyline (-135).

Chelsea bossed the Hammers last year. Enzo Maresca’s side finished 2-0 SU and 1-1 ATS against their Matchday 2 opponents.

Interestingly, Chelsea played worse against Graham Potter’s version of West Ham.

Chelsea won 2-1 as home favorites against Potter. Expected goals rated the match a 1.7-1.2 edge for Chelsea with post-shot xG rating the match 0.4-0.3 for West Ham, per fotmob.com.

But the summer window swings the advantage back to Chelsea. Potter’s squad sold Mohammed Kudus while Chelsea enjoyed a spending spree to acquire new talent.

Kudus’ absence should radically affect the West Ham attack. Last year, Kudus ranked second on West Ham in non-penalty xG plus expected assists, per fbref.com.

If West Ham can’t score at a high rate, it likely increases the win equity for Chelsea. Last season, Chelsea finished 17-7-1 (W-D-L) when conceding one or fewer goals.

Conversely, Maresca’s side went 3-2-8 (W-D-L) when allowing two or more.

Even with Potter and a better attack, West Ham struggled to generate scoring chances. The Hammers cleared 1.5 goals only 12 times last season, including four times under Potter.

Those successes under Potter came against Leicester City, Bournemouth, Brighton and Manchester United.

None of those teams finished better than ninth in post-shot xGA. Three of those teams – Leicester, Bournemouth and United – ranked 13th or worse.

Beyond those stats, history tells us road favorites perform well early in the season.

Since 2012, such teams between -165 and +115 in matches 1-6 are 50-14 SU, assuming the previous head-to-head margin falls between -2 and +2.

Just at a +1 or +2 margin: 25-7 SU, including 17-4 at +1.
