Southampton vs. Wolves: Prediction & Odds

  • Southampton is predicted to be a +0.5 home underdog against Wolves.
  • Southampton has lost each of its last eight EPL home matches.
  • My Southampton vs. Wolves prediction is the Wolves moneyline.

A pair of relegation-threatened clubs meet on Saturday at St. Mary’s Stadium with Southampton hosting Wolves.

Southampton started well at Anfield on Matchday 28, earning a 1-0 advantage at halftime. However, a 3-0 Liverpool second half gave the Reds all three points.

Wolves played to a 1-1 draw against Everton in their last league match and now sit six points clear of the relegation zone. In the last game against Southampton, Wolves won 2-0.

Check out the Premier League odds and my Southampton vs. Wolves prediction.

Southampton vs. Wolves Prediction

Based on Southampton’s weak record at home and Wolves’ dominance in the last head-to-head meeting, my Southampton vs. Wolves prediction is the Wolves Moneyline (+105).

I’d prefer this if Matheus Cunha featured for Wolves. Even with the Wolves talisman suspended, it’s still the visitors or nothing on Saturday.

The last time these teams played, Wolves captured a 2-0 home win with a +1.68 post-shot expected goal differential, per fotmob.com.

Perhaps most impressively, Wolves’ usually error-prone defense surrendered zero shots on target to Southampton.

Plus, Wolves’ attacking performance at home against Everton left me encouraged.

Vitor Pereira’s Cunha-less attack generated 1.12 post-shot xG against a defense ranking sixth in the corresponding defensive category.

Now, they get a Southampton side 20th in that metric. Additionally, Southampton has yet to earn points this season when conceding two or more goals.

That’s such a hurdle to overcome against a Wolves team that has scored in five straight and six of their previous games. Their only failure? Against a top-ranked Arsenal defense.

Curiously, there’s a 15-cent discrepancy between the Wolves moneyline and Wolves Over 1.5 (-110). If Wolves’ attack can find success, it likely means they earn all three points.

History likes the spot for Wolves as well.

Since 2012, favorites between -125 and +127 in fixture 23 onward are 55-19 SU, assuming two factors:

  • The favorite’s previous game margin falls between -1 and +0
  • The favorite’s margin in the last head-to-head meeting is +1, +2 or -2

Just when that favorite’s margin in the last head-to-head was +2: 18-7 SU. Remove the -2 result from consideration and it remains 45-18 in the favorite’s direction.
