Newcastle vs Chelsea Prediction & Odds

  • Newcastle is predicted to be a -0.5-goal home favorite against Chelsea.
  • Newcastle United has won each of its last five EPL home matches.
  • My Newcastle vs. Chelsea prediction is Chelsea to cover the spread.

It’s a Champions League six-pointer on Sunday at St. James’ Park with Newcastle United hosting Chelsea.

This match carries major significance over the European spots. Currently, Newcastle and Chelsea sit tied on points and goal differential, with Newcastle sitting in fourth.

Both teams earned points over the weekend. Newcastle drew 1-1 at Brighton while Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-1. Earlier this season, Chelsea won 2-1 over Newcastle.

Chelsea vs Newcastle: Prediction

Based on Newcastle’s struggles against the EPL’s best attacks, my Newcastle vs Chelsea prediction is the Chelsea Spread (+0.5, -130)

This game presents a very difficult handicapping challenge.

Newcastle sits sixth in post-shot expected goals this season. They’ve run into trouble against teams that rank above them, going 1-3-5 (W-D-L).

But Chelsea has struggled as market underdogs this season. The Blues have captured zero outright wins in six tries, with points only once in that spot (at home to Arsenal).

Chelsea also rate out significantly worse away from home. Entering Sunday’s match, the Blues own a +0.96 xGDiff per 90 at Stamford Bridge compared to a +0.19 xGDiff per 90 on the road.

But the only reassuring elements with Chelsea are Newcastle’s struggles against good attacks.

Including their 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge, Newcastle possess a -0.38 xGDiff per 90 minutes in those nine aforementioned matches.

Even if you only consider the four home matches within that sample, Newcastle’s xGDiff only drops to -0.13 per 90.

Their post-shot xGDiff per 90 falls even further in those home matches. Across all four, Eddie Howe’s side owns a -0.95 post-shot xGDiff per 90, per fbref.com.

That could render this a strong sell-high spot on Newcastle, which has won five straight at home. However, only one of those wins came against a side 10th or better in xGDiff.

While it’s concerning backing a Chelsea side that has covered only six times on the road, it’s the visitors or nothing on Sunday.
