Newcastle vs Arsenal Prediction, Odds & Match Preview

See the latest EPL odds, picks, and predictions for Newcastle vs Arsenal ahead of their matchup on September 28.
  • Newcastle is predicted to be a +0.5-goal home underdog against Arsenal.
  • The underdog has won each of Arsenal's last four EPL matches at St. James' Park.
  • My Newcastle vs Arsenal prediction is the Total Under 2.5 Goals (-135).

A pair of Champions League representatives meet Sunday at St. James’ Park with Newcastle hosting Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s team arrives at this match off a draw against Man City. Gabriel Martinelli’s equalizer late in the second half rescued a point for Arsenal, which sits second.

Newcastle captured a point in a 0-0 draw against Bournemouth on Matchday 5. Only Liverpool have managed to defeat Newcastle through five matches this season.

Arsenal vs Newcastle: Prediction

Based on Arsenal’s offensive injuries and the team’s cautious approach away from home, my Newcastle vs Arsenal prediction is the Total Under 2.5 Goals (-135).

Since last season, unders have proved a staple for Arsenal away from home. Over their last 21 matches, the under is 15-6, including 14-4 when oddsmakers list Arsenal as the favorite.

That played out in the reverse fixture at St. James’ Park. Newcastle took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Alexander Isak at 12 minutes, with no goals for the rest of the match.

In fact, Arteta’s attack failed to put a shot on target against Newcastle for the entire match.

Newcastle’s defense enters Sunday’s match in prime defensive form. Last week, the Magpies traveled to Bournemouth and kept a clean sheet.

From an underlying metrics standpoint, Newcastle surrendered only 0.46 xG and 0.26 post-shot xG, per fotmob.com. Last year, Bournemouth outpaced Arsenal in both xG and post-shot xG.

The issue for Newcastle? They’ve historically struggled to create against Arsenal.

Over the last two years, Eddie Howe’s side played three matches against Arsenal versus a Gabriel-William Saliba defensive partnership.

Newcastle generated only 0.57 xG per 90 in those three while never scoring more than once. Even by post-shot xG – generally worth more – Newcastle created 0.98 per 90.

Lastly, Arsenal enter this match with injury concerns in attack. Bukayo Saka still appears less than 100%, Martin Odegaard could miss the match and Noni Madueke is out for two months.

Based on those factors, I predict a low-scoring match Sunday in Newcastle.
