Manchester United vs. Tottenham Prediction, Odds & Preview

The marquee match of Matchday 5 takes place Sunday at Old Trafford with Manchester United hosting Tottenham. 

After consecutive losses as underdogs, United have enjoyed strong results recently. United beat Southampton 3-0 and, despite drawing 0-0 at Crystal Palace, dominated the underlying metrics. 

Last week, Tottenham ended a two-match losing streak with a 3-1 home win against Brentford. However, this remains a Spurs side 0-2 SU as an underdog this season.

Manchester United vs. Tottenham Prediction: Game Spread

My prediction for Manchester United vs. Tottenham is the Tottenham Spread (+0.5, -165). However, this is strictly a lean. 

I’m caught between two minds on Tottenham here. 

History says they’re in a good spot to earn points on Sunday at Old Trafford. 

Since 2012, road dogs off a 2-3 goal win as home favorites are 69% ATS, assuming those teams have 7-8 days between games and the opponent is off a road game. 

The technicality here is that Tottenham have a midweek Europa League fixture on Thursday, but so does Manchester United on Wednesday. 

Plus, Tottenham bossed the last head-to-head meeting at Old Trafford. The match finished 2-2 with Tottenham winning the expected goals battle 1.25 to 0.75, per fotmob.com. 

All that said, I’m not sure I want to lay this much juice on a Tottenham team that has struggled as underdogs this season. 

Spurs are 0-2 SU as underdogs, including a 2-1 loss at Newcastle United. That match saw Tottenham lose the expected goals battle 1.85-1.25. 

If there’s market love for Manchester United and the hosts close north of +100, I’ll consider a bet on Spurs. For right now, it’s a lean to Tottenham.
