Manchester City vs. Newcastle Prediction, Odds & Match Preview

  • Manchester City is a -0.5-goal home favorite against Newcastle.
  • Manchester City has won 13 straight home matches against Newcastle United.
  • My Manchester City vs. Newcastle prediction depends on Kevin De Bruyne’s status.

Two teams off defeats meet at the Etihad Stadium, with Manchester City hosting Newcastle United.

City briefly saw hope against Arsenal but conceded four late goals to fall 5-1 on Matchday 23. Now, they’ll look for a home win, which would mark their third straight at the Etihad.

Newcastle saw a 1-0 first-half advantage erased by Fulham on Matchday 23, falling 2-1 at St. James’ Park. Earlier this season, Newcastle earned a 1-1 draw as home dogs to City.

Check out the Premier League odds and my Manchester City vs. Newcastle prediction.

Manchester City vs. Newcastle Prediction

If Kevin De Bruyne fails to appear in the Starting XI for Manchester City, my Manchester City vs. Newcastle prediction is the Newcastle Spread (+0.5, +115).

This qualifies as a nightmare spot for Manchester City as this game is sandwiched in between two Champions League knockout legs.

The disadvantage is slightly mitigated by playing the first leg at home. However, this line is simply too big a gap for teams that are, for all intents and purposes, equal.

City owns a +0.42 expected goal differential per 90 minutes this season. At home, it rises to a +0.87 xGDiff per 90 minutes, per fbref.com.

Newcastle owns a +0.49 xGDiff per 90 for the entire season, including a +0.55 differential away from home.

But for Newcastle to have viability, they need to face a Kevin De Bruyne-less Manchester City side.

Newcastle earned points in all but one match this season when allowing one or fewer goals.

City have enjoyed a recent offensive surge, thanks to De Bruyne featuring more often in the Starting XI.

This season, De Bruyne has started 11 matches. City cleared 1.5 goals in 10, with a lone failure coming at home against Manchester United.

Conversely, City failed to start De Bruyne in 12 matches this season. In those 12, City cleared 1.5 goals only four times.

Of slight concern is that a 3-1 home win over Chelsea on Matchday 23 is one of those successes, hence the need to wait for a lineup decision.

That said, it’s Newcastle to cover the spread or nothing at all for this fixture.
