The biggest mismatch of the Premier League weekend sees Southampton travel to Anfield as heavy dogs.
Southampton shipped four goals in two straight matches and remains on only nine league points. In good news, they stayed within a goal in a 3-2 home loss to Liverpool.
The Reds captured a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Matchday 27 and hold a 13-point advantage for the league title. This season, Liverpool has won 10 of 13 at home.

Based on Southampton’s first-half struggles and Liverpool’s previous home success against bad teams, my Liverpool vs. Southampton prediction is Liverpool 1H Over 1.5 Goals (+100).
It’s a short week for Liverpool, who play in Paris on Wednesday before returning home for Saturday.
But there’s enough depth in the Liverpool attack that it shouldn’t prove an issue against the league’s worst defense by all metrics.
This season, Southampton conceded 63.3 expected goals and 62.3 post-shot xG. For reference, the teams in 19th sit on 52.7 xG and 56 post-shot xG, per fbref.com.
Recently, Southampton’s defense appears to have quit. Over their last six league matches, four teams have cleared 1.5 goals in the first half with zero clean sheets from Southampton.
That’s all without facing a Liverpool attack that leads the Premier League in expected goals and post-shot xG.
Sample Southampton’s eight matches against top-five post-shot xG attacks and bettors will find opponents cleared this number four times.
While Liverpool stayed under this number in the reverse fixture at Southampton, metrics suggest it was an unlucky result. In the first half, Liverpool created 1.97 post-shot xG.
These sides also met in a League Cup tie at St. Mary’s with Liverpool successfully clearing 1.5 goals in the first half off 1.8 post-shot xG.
Plus, there’s a bit of calculus here. The first half over 1.5 goals is -145, but both teams to score: “No” in the first half is -500.
As a result, I like taking the plus-money on a big mismatch at Anfield.
