Liverpool vs Everton Prediction, Odds & Match Preview

See the latest EPL odds, picks, and predictions for Liverpool vs Everton ahead of their matchup on September 20.
  • Liverpool is predicted to be a -1.5-goal home favorite against Everton.
  • Everton hasn’t won outright at Anfield since the 2021 league season.
  • My Liverpool vs Everton prediction is the Total Under 2.5 Goals (+120).

The latest edition of the Merseyside Derby opens Matchday 5 with Liverpool hosting Everton.

Everton proved unlucky at home against Aston Villa. The fixture finished 0-0, but Everton created 2.2 expected goals to 0.5 for Aston Villa.

As for Liverpool, the title favorites struggled at Burnley. Only a stoppage-time penalty allowed the Reds to capture all three points as -300 road favorites.

Everton vs Liverpool: Prediction

Based on Everton’s over/under trends as a road underdog and the short turnaround for Liverpool, my Liverpool vs Everton prediction is Under 2.5 Goals (+120).

Bettors saw a clear trend from Everton last season as a road dog. Particularly under David Moyes, the strategy was to sit back, absorb pressure and try to win on the counter.

The Toffees closed as a road pup 17 times last season with the total set at 2.5 or 3. Of those 17 fixtures, 13 stayed under the closing total.

The script proved more profitable with Everton playing as a big underdog.

In four of those 17 games, the home team closed at -175 or higher. All four stayed under the closing total with three staying under 1.5 goals.

From a matchup standpoint, I want to sell Everton’s attack off two straight home matches.

Based on last year’s defensive metrics, Liverpool poses the stiffest test for Everton so far this season. Last year, the Reds ranked second in both expected goals and post-shot xG allowed.

At the same time, Liverpool’s attack is walking a tightrope offensively. Arne Slot’s side has excelled by post-shot expected goals but has struggled to find big chances.

Exclusive of Liverpool’s trip to Burnley on Matchday 4, the Reds have amassed 3.4 xG against 5.6 post-shot xG, per fbref.com.

Last season, the Reds struggled against Everton. As home favorites on April 2, Slot’s team generated one goal off 1.5 xG and 0.3 post-shot xG.

Plus, Liverpool faces a midweek Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. With the short turnaround, it likely impacts the attack.

Pair those trends with the fact both meetings stayed under 2.5 goals last year, and I like the under at Anfield.
