Ipswich Town vs. Southampton Prediction, Odds & Match Preview

  • Ipswich Town is a -0.5-goal home favorite against Southampton.
  • Southampton has lost nine of its last 10 EPL matches.
  • My Ipswich Town vs. Southampton prediction is for Southampton to cover.

A relegation six-pointer features Saturday at Portman Road, with Ipswich Town hosting Southampton.

Both sides suffered bad losses on Matchday 23. Ipswich Town fell 4-1 as heavy dogs to Liverpool, while Southampton suffered a 3-1 home loss to Newcastle.

In the reverse fixture between these sides, Ipswich snatched a late point as road dogs. For Ipswich, three points in this match could move them from the relegation zone.

Ipswich Town vs. Southampton Prediction

Based on Southampton’s record against bad offenses and Ipswich’s poor record as a favorite, my Ipswich Town vs. Southampton prediction is the Southampton Spread (+0.5, -125).

New Southampton manager Ivan Juric has improved Southampton while facing a fairly difficult schedule.

Under Russell Martin, the Saints owned a -1.99 post-shot xGDiff per 90 minutes, per fbref.com. Under Juric, it rises to a -1.31 post-shot xGDiff.

That may not sound like a lot, but it’s worth noting this marks only the third time under Juric Southampton is +300 or shorter on the three-way moneyline.

One of the previous two matches resulted in a 5-0 beatdown against Brentford. However, that was to be expected against a Bees side fifth in post-shot xG.

As home dogs to West Ham – Southampton closed +210 – they lost 1-0 but recorded a -0.3 expected goal differential and a -0.2 post-shot xGDiff.

Under no circumstances, even with the home field adjustment, should Ipswich close higher than +100 against Southampton.

Ipswich closed a home favorite twice this season and is 0-2 SU against the three-way moneyline in those contests.

For the entire season, Ipswich owns a -1 post-shot xGDiff per 90 and a -1.15 xGDiff per 90.

Even if you include Martin’s matches for Southampton, there’s an argument these sides are closer in xGDiff quality than the line suggests.  Southampton, for the season, are at -1.36.

History also likes Southampton to cover the spread in this match.

Since 2012, half-goal road dogs between +217 and +294 on the moneyline are 41-9 ATS, assuming both teams closed as dogs in the last game and the favorite lost.

Just over the previous 20 games within that sample, underdogs covered 18 of those games and won 10 outright.

As a result, take Southampton to cover at Portman Road against an overrated Ipswich Town.
