Everton vs. Liverpool Prediction, Odds & Match Preview

  • Everton is a +1.5-goal home underdog against Liverpool.
  • Liverpool has scored during the second half in each of its last 16 EPL matches.
  • My Everton vs. Liverpool prediction focuses on the pregame over/under.

The first edition of this season’s Merseyside Derby features on Wednesday at Goodison Park, with Everton hosting Liverpool.

Everton have enjoyed a resurgence since appointing David Moyes. They’ve taken nine points from nine in three matches, creating a nine-point cushion from the relegation zone.

Liverpool’s last league match saw the Reds earn a 2-0 win as road favorites against Bournemouth. Currently, Arne Slot’s side owns a six-point advantage atop the table.

Check out the Premier League odds and my Everton vs. Liverpool prediction.

Everton vs. Liverpool Prediction

Based on Everton’s weak attacking metrics without Dwight McNeil and their strong defensive record, my Everton vs. Liverpool prediction is Under 2.5 Goals (+110).

It’s time to sell Everton’s attack, which has notched north of 1.9 post-shot xG in two straight home matches.

But the defensive quality of those opponents must be considered. Those matches came against Tottenham and Leicester City, which rank 15th and 19th in post-shot xGA, per fbref.com.

Bettors’ expectation should be an Everton performance closer to their road fixture at Brighton. That match saw Everton score off a penalty kick, their only shot on target.

For the season, Brighton’s defense sits closer in quality to Liverpool’s. As it stands, the Seagulls rank ninth in post-shot xGA, while Liverpool sits second.

Everton have played three matches this season against sides fourth or better in post-shot xGA. They’ve created only 0.6 xG per 90 and 0.5 post-shot xG per 90.

In the two matches without talisman Dwight McNeil, Everton’s average drops to 0.5 xG per 90 and 0.1 post-shot xG per 90.

At the same time, Everton’s defense record should be applauded.

The Toffees rank fifth in post-shot xGA per 90 and have played five matches against top-five post-shot xG attacks with Jarrad Branthwaite in the lineup.

None of those five opponents have scored more than once. Across all five matches, Everton surrendered 1.44 post-shot xGA per 90.

Even if you only sample the four toughest matches, it’s still only 1.7 post-shot xGA per 90, with only one of those matches coming at home.

Pair those trends with the fact both teams will play this match on short rest and bettors should expect a low-scoring contest.
