  • My Chelsea vs Brighton prediction is a SGP: BTTS & Over 2.5 Goals (-115)

Brighton look to bounce back from a Matchday 5 draw as road underdogs against Chelsea.

The Seagulls gained a 2-0 advantage over Tottenham last week. However, Fabian Huerzler’s side surrendered two unanswered tallies to draw 2-2 against Tottenham.

Chelsea fell 2-1 at Manchester United last week to end a four-match unbeaten run. Now, they’ll seek revenge for a 3-0 defeat at Brighton in the last meeting between these teams.

Brighton vs Chelsea: Prediction

Based on the high-scoring nature of this head-to-head fixture and Brighton’s early attacking success, my Chelsea vs Brighton prediction is a SGP: BTTS & Over 2.5 Goals (-115).

A bit of calculus exists behind this prediction. Over Brighton’s last 24 as an underdog, a first-half goal has occurred in 23.

In this instance, it doesn’t really matter who scores early, assuming the trend holds. Either outcome puts Brighton in a good gamestate position.

Last year, Brighton struggled to limit chances with leads. Per understat.com, Brighton conceded 1.43 expected goals per 90 at a neutral state and 1.5 xG per 90 at a +1 gamestate.

Conversely, Brighton ran like kings offensively in a negative gamestate. Huerzler’s side generated 2.03 xG per 90 at a -1 state and 1.97 at a -2 or higher state.

That showed in the reverse fixture between these teams at Stamford Bridge, a 4-2 thriller won by Chelsea.

Brighton took an early lead, fell behind 3-1 and scored a second in the opening half. Then, another Chelsea goal came in 41 minutes.

Over the last five head-to-head meetings between these clubs, over 2.5 goals have been scored in all five matches.

The key question then becomes whether both teams can score in this fixture. Since last season, Brighton has kept a road clean sheet only five times in 21 road matches.

Across those 21 fixtures, Brighton scored a goal in all but two matches. They’ve also scored in eight straight league meetings against Chelsea.

One last factor to consider: since Huerzler took over as manager, Brighton road matches are 9-3 to the over when Brighton is the dog.

Across all 12, this same game parlay hit nine times as well.
