  • Aston Villa is predicted to be a -0.5-goal home favorite against Newcastle.
  • Aston Villa has scored at least one goal in each of its last 15 EPL home matches.
  • My Aston Villa vs Newcastle prediction is Aston Villa Over 1.5 Goals (-102).

To close out the opening day of EPL Matchday 1, Aston Villa hosts Newcastle at Villa Park.

Home teams have dominated this head-to-head fixture of late. Villa won 4-1 when these sides played at Villa Park after losing 3-0 early last season at St. James’ Park.

All told, the home side has won seven of the previous eight meetings between these clubs. The lone exception came when Newcastle won at Villa Park in January 2024.

Newcastle vs Aston Villa: Prediction

Based on Aston Villa’s attacking success at home and its penchant for high-scoring home games, my Aston Villa vs Newcastle prediction is Villa Over 1.5 Goals (-102).

The first element worth noting: I’ll be surprised if Villa fails to score.

Unai Emery’s side has scored at least once in 15 straight home matches. Since appointing Emery in October 2022, the record strengthens further.

In 52 home matches behind Emery, Villa scored at least once in all but three home matches.

That leads to the core question for this fixture: can Villa find that second goal?

Going by Villa’s most recent performance against Newcastle suggests the answer is yes.

In the last meeting at Villa Park, the hosts tallied four goals off 2.33 post-shot expected goals, per fotmob.com.

In general, Villa performed markedly better at home offensively. Last year, it produced 1.76 xG per 90 at home compared to 1.19 on the road.

The same is true of the 2023-24 campaign. In that year, Villa notched 2.05 xG per 90 at home compared to 1.28 on the road.

While Newcastle ranked as one of the league’s better defenses last year, Eddie Howe’s side was prone to an occasional slip-up on the road.

The Magpies conceded two or more goals only 11 times last year. Six of those failures came away from home.

Finally, Villa has historically beaten this market at a better rate than this market’s implied probability.

Since 2022, Villa has closed a home favorite 45 times in the league. It has cleared 1.5 goals 30 times, good for a 66.7% hit rate.

Comparatively, the implied probability on this market is 50.5%.
