The William Jennings Trophy is another one of the NHL’s statistic-based awards.Â
It’s given each year to the goaltender or goaltenders whose team has the fewest allowed goals during the regular season. The award can be given to two goaltenders for the same team, as long as each of them has played at least 25 games.Â
This was how the Vezina Trophy was decided until the 1981-82 season. After that year, the league amended the Vezina voting to be awarded based on the opinions of the league’s general managers, and thus the Jennings was created.Â
The reigning winner of the Jennings trophy is Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who won after the Jets had a league-best 191 goals against this past season.Â

Who’s Favored to Win the William Jennings Trophy?
Hellebuyck is favored to repeat as the Jennings trophy winner this upcoming season.Â
If he wins this year, it would be Hellebuyck’s third-straight Jennings trophy win. Additionally, Hellebuyck has won the Vezina Trophy in back-to-back years and is favored to win once again this upcoming season.Â
What’s more interesting for me is whether Hellebuyck can pull along his backup goaltender, Eric Comrie, to win the award. Comrie is currently fourth on the odds list for the Jennings at +800.Â
As previously mentioned, he would need to start in at least 25 games to be eligible for a Jennings victory. He came close last season, appearing in 20 games for the Jets. If Comrie can get just a few more starts and keep pace with Hellebuyck when he’s filling in, he should be a strong candidate to win alongside Hellebuyck.Â
