On average, most shot attempts in the NHL come in at 80-90 mph, but there’s a rare breed of players who can hit a one-timer or slapshot that comes in at over 100 mph. 

We know this thanks to the NHL’s ‘EDGE’ player tracking data, which can show us things like shot location, skater speed, and shot speed.

While front offices and the league have had access to this data for a while, it only became publicly available in 2023. 

Here are the 10 players who had the highest maximum shot speeds in the NHL last season.

Buffalo Sabres center Tage Thompson recorded the highest maximum shot speed coming in at 106 mph. For reference, that’s faster than the highest velocity pitch ever recorded in MLB, which was Aroldis Chapman in 2010 at 105.8. 

Thompson also had the most shots that topped 100 mph in the league last season with five. Additionally, he had 48 shots that were between 90 and 100 mph. 

Last year, he had a solid season with the Sabres, scoring 44 goals and contributing 28 assists in 76 games played. 

Thompson made his first All-Star team in 2023 and is heading into the fourth year of a 7-year, $50 million deal with Buffalo.
