Mascots are important for a variety of reasons.Â
They give kids who are too young to understand hockey a reason to like the sport, help sell plush dolls in the pro shop, and inspire conversations between fan bases over which team’s mascot would win in a fight.Â
Thirty NHL franchises currently have mascots.Â
The only two teams missing are the New York Rangers, who have never had a mascot and don’t appear interested in having one, and the Utah Mammoth, who have yet to unveil their new mascot.Â
Here’s a ranking of the oldest mascots in the league as of the 2025-26 season.Â

Which Team Has the Oldest Active Mascot in the NHL?
Calgary has the oldest mascot in the league, Harvey the Hound, modeled after a Siberian Husky.Â
He was first introduced to Flames fans in 1984, becoming the league’s first mascot at the time. In his first game, the Flames beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 10-3 in a game that featured two hat tricks.Â
Since then, Harvey’s most notable incident occurred in a 2003 game against the Oilers, when Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish ripped his tongue out.Â
McTavish grew annoyed by the mascot after he taunted the bench while the Flames were up 4-0 and threw his tongue onto the ice. The Oilers almost tied the game up after the de-tonguing, scoring three goals.Â
