We’re still only a few weeks into the NHL regular season, but there are some early signs for how the Presidents’ Trophy race could pan out as the season goes along.Â
For the uninitiated, the trophy has been awarded each year since the 1985-86 season to the team that finishes with the most points in the league. However, most NHL fan bases would tell you that they don’t want their team to win the Presidents’ Trophy.Â
Since 2015, no team that has won the Presidents’ Trophy has even made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and two teams have been eliminated in the first round.Â
The reason for this? It’s mainly that the ingredients for a very successful regular season team, which needs to be fundamentally sound for a whole 82-game season, and a very successful postseason team, which only needs to get hot for a couple of months, are different.Â
Here’s a look at which team has the best odds for the Presidents’ Trophy as of November 5.Â
Presidents’ Trophy Odds 2025-26
| Rank | Team | Odds |
| 1 | Avalanche | 310 |
| 2 | Golden Knights | 475 |
| 3 | Hurricanes | 500 |
| 4 | Stars | 800 |
| 5 | Devils | 1000 |
| 6 | Oilers | 1300 |
| 7 | Lightning | 1400 |
| 8 | Jets | 1700 |
| 9 | Mammoth | 2800 |
| 10 | Canadiens | 3000 |
2025-26 Presidents’ Trophy Favorite
Right now, the Avalanche are a +310 favorite to win the Presidents’ Trophy for this regular season. It’s for good reason, too, as Colorado is the only team remaining in the NHL with only one loss in regulation.Â
As a result of that distinction, they have the most points of any team in the league, putting them at the top of the Western Conference above last year’s Trophy winner, Winnipeg.Â
I don’t think the Avalanche are going to keep pace with this heater they’ve started the year on. If they did, they’d be a 60-70-win team.
I’m also not sold on their long-term viability as a Presidents’ Trophy favorite, and it’s really just because of one reason: Scott Wedgewood is not an elite goaltender. You need an elite goaltender, not just a great one, to win that award.
His stats are great so far this season. He’s got a 2.49 GAA and a .902 save percentage. But unless we’re just now seeing Wedgewood’s true form in his age-33 season, I don’t expect the numbers to remain that high.Â
I still believe the Jets are a better candidate to win the Presidents’ Trophy than any other team in the league.Â
