In NFL betting, an octopus is when a player scores a touchdown and a two-point conversation on the same drive. That would mean the player would contribute eight points, and thus the name octopus.
It is worth noting if a quarterback throws a touchdown pass and then rushes for a two-point conversion, that would not count.
Where Did Octopus Come From?
The term was invented by Mitch Goldich of Sports Illustrated in 2019. The prop bet has become more popular in recent years, especially for AFC/NFC Championship games and the Super Bowl.
When Was the Last Octopus in the NFL?
The last octopus was Dec. 15, 2024, by Davante Adams. The Jets wide receiver caught a touchdown pass against the Jaguars and then caught a pass on the subsequent two-point conversion.
