Teryl Austin serves as the current defensive coordinator of the Steelers.

Pittsburgh hired Austin prior to the 2019 NFL season. Initially, he served as the Steelers’ secondary coach and senior defensive assistant.

Austin worked in that role for three years. Before the 2022 season, Pittsburgh promoted Austin to defensive coordinator.

The 60-year-old Austin helped guide Pittsburgh’s defense to a strong defense. In the last three years, the Steelers finished 10th or better in points allowed.

Before Pittsburgh, Austin gained experience with five other NFL teams:

  • Seahawks: Defensive Backs Coach (2003-06)

  • Ravens: Secondary Coach (2011-13)
  • Lions: Defensive Coordinator (2014-17)

Austin also holds 13 years of coaching experience in college football. To start, he worked as a Penn State grad assistant.

He continued on to three different schools – Wake Forest, Syracuse and Michigan – as a defensive backs coach.

Finally, Austin worked as Florida’s defensive coordinator in 2010 before returning to the NFL.
