After Mac Jones crashed out with the Patriots, the former 2021 first-round pick was traded to Jacksonville in March 2024. The Jaguars declined his fifth-year option, leaving him as a free agent for 2025.

Jones ultimately signed a contract with San Francisco, which could have drafted him at No. 3 overall in the first place. (They went with Trey Lance instead.)

Brock Purdy, who was drafted in the seventh round of the following year, ended up as the 49ers’ starter. But when Purdy was sidelined with injuries to his toe and shoulder at the beginning of the 2025 campaign, it was Jones’ turn to step up in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

For now, NFL fans will be treated to a little bit of alternate reality. What would the 49ers look like if they ended up with Jones after the infamous 2021 quarterback draft?

Mac Jones Contract

In March, Mac Jones signed a two-year contract with the 49ers worth $8.41 million.

Jones’ contract has incentives that add to his compensation when he gets playing time. For every regular-season 49ers win where Jones plays at least 25% of the snaps, he is paid an additional $100,000. (That clause requires at least four wins for the money to vest.)

Mac Jones Signing Bonus

Mac Jones received a $2.14 million signing bonus when he agreed to his new contract with the 49ers.

Mac Jones Salary

Jordan Love can earn $3.75 million from his NFL contract in 2025.

More than half of that was the signing bonus he was paid in March. Another $1.17 million is the NFL veteran minimum salary he is owed according to the terms of the CBA.

The remaining $440,000 breaks down to a $100,000 restructure bonus and a $20,000 per-game roster bonus, paid out every time Jones is an active member of the 49ers’ 53-man game roster.

Mac Jones Guaranteed Money

Mac Jones’ contract includes $4.75 million in guaranteed salary. That’s his signing bonus, his entire 2025 compensation package, and only $1 million of his 2026 salary.
