As a general rule, 2025 running backs get paid exactly like you think they do. The average salary is depressed and devalued because the importance of the position has been depressed and devalued.
Christian McCaffrey is a major exception. In the case of players like McCaffrey or Alvin Kamara, they are considered more offensive weapons than pure running backs.Â
That’s one major reason why McCaffrey is the No. 3 highest-paid running back in the NFL this year. His teams rarely look at him as just another running back.Â
Christian McCaffrey Contract
In June 2024, Christian McCaffrey signed a two-year contract extension with the 49ers worth $38 million.Â
That agreement extends the four-year deal McCaffrey initially signed with Carolina, which took effect in 2022 – the year he was dealt to San Francisco.
McCaffrey’s current extension runs through the 2027 season.Â
Christian McCaffrey Signing Bonus
Christian McCaffrey received a $14,290,000 signing bonus after signing his 2024 extension.Â
Christian McCaffrey Salary
Christian McCaffrey can make up to $16.2 million from his NFL contract during the 2025 season.Â
Most of that money – $14.245 million – is an option bonus. More than half was guaranteed and due in April.Â
The rest is base salary ($1.3 million), a workout bonus ($200,00), and a $29,411 roster bonus that is paid out every time he’s on the 53-man active roster for a regular-season 49ers game.Â
Christian McCaffrey Guaranteed Money
McCaffrey’s contract extension includes $24 million in guaranteed money, all of which has already been paid out.
