Who is the Kansas City Chiefs’ Defensive Coordinator?

  • Steve Spagnuolo is the Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive coordinator.
  • Spagnuolo worked 13 years in the NFL as a DC for three teams.
  • In 52 games as a head coach, Spagnuolo won only 11 games.

Steve Spagnuolo is the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs. 

Spagnuolo joined the Chiefs prior to the 2019 season. In the last two seasons, Spagnuolo coordinated a defense that ranked fourth or better in points allowed. 

Before 2023, Kansas City’s best ranking in that category was seventh. 

Not including 2025, Spagnuolo owns 13 years of coordinating experience, including his six with Kansas City. 

He coordinated the Giants’ defense from 2007-08 and earned a Super Bowl win in ‘07. 

Spagnuolo returned to New York as DC from 2015-17. In 2017, he worked four games as the interim head coach. 

He also worked as the Saints’ defensive coordinator in 2012 for one year. 

In addition to his coordinating experience, Spagnuolo spent three years as Rams head coach. From 2009-11, he worked 48 games with St. Louis, going 10-38. 

Supplementing that experience are stops with the Eagles (1999-2006) and Ravens (2013-14).

Spagnuolo also coached 16 years in college football. His stops: Wagner, Lafayette, Connecticut, Maine, Rutgers and Bowling Green. 

Prior to joining the Eagles in ‘99, he also spent a year in NFL Europe. There, he worked as the defensive coordinator for the Frankfurt Galaxy.
