Chargers vs. Eagles: NFL Week 14 Odds, Prediction

Justin Herbert and the Chargers will go for a second straight win as home dogs to the Eagles. 

Los Angeles captured a win and cover with a 31-14 win over the Raiders on Sunday. The win improved Jim Harbaugh’s team to 8-4 on the year, two games behind Denver in the division. 

Philadelphia has dropped two straight games, including a defeat on Black Friday to the Bears. The game marked Philly’s worst rushing defense performance of the year, allowing 281 yards.

Chargers vs. Eagles Prediction

Based on Philadelphia’s inconsistent offensive record and their troubling rushing defense performance last Friday, my Chargers vs Eagles prediction is the Chargers Spread (+3, -110). 

This game features a couple of key injuries to monitor. Lane Johnson could miss a third straight game, and it’s worth noting the Eagles are 0-2 since he sustained his injury. 

Herbert is also slated for a hand procedure on Monday. While his status is uncertain, both Herbert and Harbaugh expressed optimism that he’ll play on MNF. 

If Herbert plays, the matchup essentially comes down to how LA’s defense plays against Philadelphia’s offense. 

In his career, Herbert is 38-12-2 ATS when his defense allows 24 points or less. When his defense allows 25 or more, he’s 11-29 ATS. 

The fact that Philadelphia couldn’t move the ball on a fraudulent Bears defense is troubling. Additionally, Johnson’s absence continues to impact the run game and pass protection. 

Not since Week 8 have the Eagles managed over 21 points. For the entire season, the Eagles scored over 24.5 points only four times. 

Over the last two weeks, Philadelphia ranks 19th in offensive success rate and 23rd in rushing success rate. 

That’s essentially how you attack the Chargers, which ranks 24th in rush defense DVOA. 

On the other side of the ball, LA could return Omarian Hampton. That should further complicate Philly’s defensive issues against the run. 

Also, the Eagles now play on the road after watching their defense face 85 total plays. That could exacerbate the defensive problems for a team that ranks 20th in rush defense DVOA. 

Given those factors, I predict the Chargers stay within the number on MNF. That said, I would wait on Herbert’s status before locking in a prediction for Monday’s game.
