Robert Saleh returns to the Bay Area as 49ers defensive coordinator for 2025.

Saleh starts with Kyle Shanahan after his tenure as Jets head coach ended. In three-and-a-half seasons, Saleh finished 20-36 with no postseason appearances.

Now he returns to lead a 49ers defense that enjoyed previous success under Saleh.

The 46-year-old worked as the 49ers DC from 2017-20. In his best season as coordinator (2019), Saleh led a 49ers defense that ranked second in yards allowed and eighth in points allowed.

Before San Francisco, Saleh worked for three NFL teams from 2005-16:

  • Houston Texans (2005-10)
  • Seattle Seahawks (2011-13)
  • Jacksonville Jaguars (2014-16)

Saleh spent six of those seasons in defensive quality control. From 2009-10, he worked as the Texans’ assistant linebackers coach.

For the entirety of his Jacksonville tenure, Saleh worked as the team’s linebackers coach.

In addition to his NFL experience, Saleh spent four years working in college football.

From 2002-05, he worked as a defensive assistant with three schools: Michigan State, Central Michigan and Georgia.
