Mark Few became Gonzaga head coach in 1999, 10 years after he first joined the program as a graduate assistant.
Few coached high school basketball for a few years after graduating from Oregon before joining Dan Fitzgerald’s staff at Gonzaga in 1989.
Who Coached Gonzaga Before Mark Few?
Dan Monson was Gonzaga head coach before Mark Few.
Monson became head coach in 1997 after nine seasons on Fitzgerald’s staff (1988-97). A native of Spokane, Monson played college football at Idaho before starting a basketball coaching career as a grad assistant at UAB in 1986.
After leading Gonzaga to the Elite Eight in 1999, Monson left for Minnesota. He was replaced by Few, who spent the previous nine seasons as an assistant coach.
