These are the days of the old Big East, where the 16-team juggernaut regularly got nine or ten teams into the field.
That year, the four that made the Elite Eight were No. 1 Louisville, No. 1 UConn, No. 1 Pittsburgh, and No. 3 Villanova. The latter two played in the East Regional championship.Â
In 2016, the ACC matched the Big East with four teams in the Elite Eight after setting a new record for most Sweet 16 teams from the same conference.
