Illinois has reached the Final Four five times. Only two of those appearances (1989 and 2005) has come after the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985:

  • 1949
  • 1951
  • 1952
  • 1989
  • 2005

The Fighting Illini are 1-4 in the national semifinals, winning in 2005. They lost to North Carolina, 75-70, in the national final. Both teams were No. 1 seeds.
