Farthest a 16-Seed Has Gone in March Madness

UMBC and Fairleigh Dickinson both reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the farthest a 16-seed has gone in tourney history.

UMBC were the first No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1 seed in March Madness. After beating Virginia in the first round, the lost to No. 9 seed Kansas State in the second round, 50-43.

The Knights, however, were the biggest underdog to win in tourney history. As a 23-point underdog to Purdue, FDU delivered the biggest March Madness upset of all time. They lost to FAU in the second round, 78-70.
