In what might be the most compelling matchup of the NBA Cup quarterfinals, the Los Angeles Lakers will host the San Antonio Spurs at 10 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Crypto.com Arena on Amazon Prime.
Los Angeles (17-6) is a 7.5-point favorite, a line that moved from -4.5 after it was announced that Victor Wembanyama would remain out for San Antonio (16-7). Still, my Spurs vs. Lakers prediction believes San Antonio is being undervalued.
Spurs vs. Lakers Prediction: Wednesday, Dec. 10
- Spurs +7.5 (-115)
Based on the initial NBA betting lines, I like taking the points with San Antonio (+7.5) as my favorite Spurs vs. Lakers prediction.
Wembanyama won’t be making his return from a calf injury that has kept him out since mid-November, but he will travel with the team. Yet the Spurs have performed admirably without him.
The Spurs have gone 8-3 without Wembanyama, thanks to the play of backup center Luke Kornet. That’s why they signed him to a four-year, $41 million deal in the offseason. The Spurs have a +2.1 net rating over the past 11 games, ranking sixth in offensive rating.
I trust what I’ve seen from San Antonio in recent weeks, particularly against a Los Angeles team that might be a bit overvalued based on its overall record.
The Lakers’ net rating of +2 is league average. According to Basketball Reference, the Lakers’ expected win-loss record is 13-10. They have been running hot with the best clutch record in the league.
LeBron James recently made his season debut, but he’s had a slower ramp-up process. He’s only scored more than 17 points twice in his seven contests.
Given all these factors, I like the idea of taking the points with the Spurs in this NBA Cup matchup.
Prediction: Spurs +7.5 (-115)
