It just seems like yesterday when the Kings had one of the best offensive teams in basketball, earning the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference with a 48-34 record.
A lot can change in a few seasons.
Sacramento has declined since that magical 2022-23 season. The Kings posted a losing record last year, prompting them to make a coaching change by replacing Mike Brown with Doug Christie. They also traded away D’Aaron Fox, landing DeMar DeRozan in the process to reunite with Zach LaVine after their time together in Chicago.
As the Western Conference version of the Chicago Bulls, the Kings fittingly ended their season in the play-in tournament. They suffered a 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
Sacramento’s recent trajectory suggests that the team may finish with fewer wins than its win total, but this is also reflected in its overall profile following the trade of Fox last year.
In the final 32 games of the season, the Kings went 15-17 while ranking 19th in the league with a -0.2 net rating. They were 22nd in defensive rating over that span, one spot above the Washington Wizards.
Given the strength of the West, it could be another season of fighting for a play-in spot in Sacramento.
