They made the most of having no expectations, winning 50 games to earn the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference. They ranked fifth in the league in net rating, establishing themselves as contenders by pushing the Denver Nuggets to seven games.
But the best part is that this team could have done better. Los Angeles had an expected record of 53-29. Kawhi Leonard only played 37 games, which allowed him to be healthy entering the postseason.
James Harden made the All-NBA third team in his age-35 season, averaging 22.8 points, 8.7 assists, and 5.8 rebounds. Center Ivica Zubac took a significant step last year, averaging 16.8 points and 12.6 rebounds per contest.
Assuming Leonard can play more than last year, I have a difficult time envisioning much of a drop-off for the Clippers. I’d argue they have a case to be the Pacific Division favorites this preseason. The Clippers trail the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors in the division.
That should create value on the Clippers in most NBA betting markets, especially those involving the regular season. The Clippers have cleared this win total nine times in the last 13 years, but haven’t advanced past Round 1 since 2021.
