Tigers vs. Guardians Prediction: Game 2 AL Wild Card Preview

  • Get MLB expert picks and analysis for Tigers vs. Guardians.
  • The Guardians are -130 favorites in Game 2.
  • Detroit is -325 to win the wild-card series.

Following a gem by Tarik Skubal in Game 1, the Detroit Tigers can advance to the ALDS with a win in Tuesday’s Game 2 against the Cleveland Guardians at 1:08 p.m. ET on Wednesday at Progressive Field on ESPN.

Skubal tossed 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a 2-1 road win over the Guardians. It puts the Tigers in a favorable position in a best-of-three series. Since MLB moved to this wild-card format, the winner of Game 1 has won the series 12 times in as many matchups.

However, Cleveland begins as a -120 favorite with Tanner Bibee (12-11, 4.24 ERA) on the bump against Detroit right-hander Casey Mize (14-6, 3.87 ERA).

Here’s a look at the latest MLB odds and my Tigers vs. Guardians prediction ahead of Game 2:

Tigers vs. Guardians Odds for Game 2

  • Tigers moneyline: +110
  • Guardians moneyline: -130
  • Total: 6.5

Tigers vs. Guardians Prediction for Game 2

Based on the initial MLB betting lines, I like the under and Detroit’s moneyline for my Tigers vs. Guardians prediction ahead of Wednesday’s Game 2.

Before Game 1, I backed the Tigers’ series price at -110 as a better way to back them than their -170 moneyline price tag in the opener. They are now the favorites to win the series, needing one victory in the next two days.

In the previous 12 best-of-three wild-card series, only two have made it to Game 3. That suggests Detroit could finish the job on Wednesday.

That said, I prefer the under rather than double-dipping on Detroit to win Game 2. It could be another low-scoring matchup after the two teams combined for three runs on nine hits in the opener.

Cleveland entered the postseason with the worst lineup among all playoff teams, ranking 28th (ahead of only the Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies) with a wRC+ of 87. The Guardians then only hit one ball out of the infield against the Tigers on Tuesday.

On the other side, Detroit surrendered a double-digit lead in the division over the final weeks due to its offense dropping below average. The Tigers have a wRC+ of 97 since Aug. 1.

I expect this total to close at 6.5, so I like this under as long as it remains at seven.

Prediction: Under 7 (-120) – Pick made Tuesday
