- Get MLB expert picks and analysis for Red Sox vs. Yankees.
- The Yankees are -135 favorites in Game 1.
- New York is -175 to win the series.
The headliner of this year’s wild-card round is a rivalry matchup between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Game 1 of this best-of-three series is set for 6:08 p.m. ET on Tuesday on ESPN.
This will be the sixth postseason series between these two rivals. The Red Sox have had the advantage since their historic comeback in the 2004 ALCS. They also won the 2018 ALDS and a wild-card game in 2021.
Boston went 9-4 against New York this season, including 5-2 at Yankee Stadium. Yet the Yankees enter this week’s series as the betting favorites.
Here’s a look at the latest MLB odds and my Red Sox vs. Yankees prediction ahead of Game 1:
Red Sox vs. Yankees Odds for Game 1
- Red Sox moneyline: +115
- Yankees moneyline: -135

Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction for Game 1
My Red Sox vs. Yankees prediction suggests backing New York at home in Game 1 via the latest MLB betting lines.
When the World Series market was released last October, I suggested backing the Red Sox as 40/1 long shots to win it all. I’d love nothing more for that ticket to have life this October, but I don’t see that happening, and neither does the market.
New York is -175 to win the series, despite a short -130 price tag in Game 1. All 12 winners of the opener have won the series since MLB moved to this wild-card format three years ago, suggesting the importance of Tuesday’s matchup.
Boston left-hander Garrett Crochet has the edge over New York southpaw Max Fried, but the Yankees have most other advantages.
They have the best player in Aaron Judge, who closed as the betting favorite to win a third MVP. Meanwhile, the Red Sox will be without Roman Anthony in this series. The Yankees rank No. 1 in team wRC+ (119), while the Red Sox are 11th (103).
The Red Sox have won all four matchups against the Yankees with Crochet on the bump this year, but he did give up 10 runs, including five in one start. Fried posted a 1.96 ERA in three starts against Boston this year.
I’ll back the Yankees at a short price in a pivotal Game 1, but know my rooting interest lies with the Red Sox.
Prediction: Yankees ML (-130) – Pick made Monday
