Major League Baseball continues to get younger, with players climbing up the professional ranks much quicker to make an immediate impact. But every ballclub still needs veteran leadership throughout a 162-game season.

The oldest player in MLB history is Satchel Paige, who played his final MLB game for the Kansas City Athletics on Sept. 25, 1965, at 59. His ability to stay in the game until he was almost 60 was obviously out of the ordinary, but there are still a few players proving that age is just a number when it comes to a career in baseball.

*Note: all ages are as of June 30, which is the date MLB uses to determine a season age.

Who is the Oldest MLB Player in 2025?

For the second straight season, Justin Verlander began as the oldest player in MLB, but eventually relinquished that title to Rich Hill.

The Kansas City Royals called up Hill to start against the Chicago Cubs on July 22. Hill, who is 45 years old and in his 21st MLB season, gave up one earned run on six hits across five innings.

Hill has now played for 14 different teams in his career. He was also the oldest MLB player in 2024, throwing 3 2/3 innings in late August at 44 years old for the Boston Red Sox. Hill, who is currently a free agent, has been the oldest player in the sport for three consecutive seasons.

Before Hill’s call-up, Verlander was the oldest player in the majors at 42 years old. He signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the San Francisco Giants last offseason. Verlander went 4-11 with a 3.85 ERA in 29 starts during his 20th season.
