Pete Alonso is a free agent for the second straight offseason. This time around, it seems more plausible that he could leave the New York Mets.
Alonso, who has been with the Mets since making his MLB debut in 2019, is looking to cash in on a bigger payday. The market wasn’t what he expected last winter, prompting Alonso to sign a two-year, $54 million deal last February.
After opting out this offseason, Alonso is set to meet with multiple teams this week during the Winter Meetings. Could the Polar Bear be on the move?
Pete Alonso Next Team Odds & Favorites
The BetMGM online sportsbook doesn’t offer odds on Alonso’s next team, but I’m expecting some of the big-market teams to be interested in signing the 31-year-old first baseman. Those teams simply have more margin for error if the deal becomes less efficient toward the end of his contract.
On Monday, the New York Post reported that Alonso will sit with the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles during this week’s Winter Meetings. It’s certainly notable that Alonso is willing to drive to the event himself to have these sit-downs, indicating his seriousness about landing a good deal.
Alonso is likely to meet with other interested teams this week. The Mets have a chance to bring him back, given their relationship. He’s delivered some memorable moments in his seven seasons with the team, including a 53-homer campaign as a rookie.
The Cincinnati Reds are also viewed as a potential fit following their surprise playoff appearance last season. They could be interested in making a splash to increase their chances of winning the National League Central for the first time since 2012.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are willing to spend more money this offseason, so they might overpay Alonso to boost their offensive production.
As things currently stand, I’d rank these teams as the favorites to land Alonso:
- Red Sox
- Mets
- Reds
Pete Alonso Next Team Prediction
Based on the current reporting, I’m predicting that Alonso will finally leave New York to sign with the Boston Red Sox this offseason.
Craig Breslow, the president of baseball operations for the Red Sox, wants to bring in a proven bat for the middle of the lineup. That could be accomplished by re-signing Alex Bregman, but landing Alonso might make more sense.
The Red Sox have an Alonso-sized hole in their lineup. Their production from the first base position finished the year with a wRC+ of 86 and a -0.7 fWAR in 2025.
Triston Casas, who was limited to 29 games last season, hasn’t finished with more than a 0.4 WAR in three of his four campaigns thus far. Rafael Devers got several starts at designated hitter before being traded to the San Francisco Giants.
As a result, the Red Sox were forced to piece together the first base and DH spots in their lineup en route to a postseason appearance. They ultimately fell to the New York Yankees in three games in the American League wild-card series.
By signing Alonso, Boston wouldn’t have to give up on Casas because it could play both players at first base and DH. But it would give the Red Sox some sort of cushion if Casas doesn’t reach his full potential.
More importantly, Alonso would give the Red Sox a bat they can count on in their lineup. The Polar Bear has delivered 118 or more RBI in three of his past four seasons. He’s hit 34-plus home runs in all but one of his seven campaigns.
Alonso led the NL with 41 doubles in 2025. He finished the year with 38 home runs, 126 RBI, and an OPS+ of 144. It’s now or never for Alonso to land his major contract.
