With the end of the regular season just around the corner, we are running out of opportunities to bet on Skenes.
Because the prop markets are so efficient, I’m actually betting against Skenes in Monday’s matchup against the St. Louis Cardinals. But that is more of a reflection of the Pittsburgh Pirates than the talented rookie hurler.
With St. Louis right-hander Andre Pallante starting, Pittsburgh’s lineup has a tough challenge on deck. The Pirates rank 28th in wRC+ against righties, which is better than only the Colorado Rockies and the Chicago White Sox.
St. Louis also has a better bullpen, ranking seventh in the league with a 3.64 ERA. Pittsburgh’s relievers are 27th with a 4.60 ERA.
Bettors want to back Skenes, and the baseball odds reflect that. There is value in this plus-money price on the home underdog.
