After being my favorite over bet in last year’s win total market, I predict the Padres will finish under their season win total in 2025.
That happens when the market provides an eight-win increase in the Padres’ futures odds, marking their third-highest win total in franchise history.
Here’s how the top two seasons unfolded:
- 2023: 93.5 win total (82 wins)
- 2021: 94.5 win total (79 wins)
The Padres haven’t made any improvements to last year’s team that went 93-69. In fact, they have lost Blake Snell, Tanner Scott, and Jurickson Profar.
San Diego got hot down the stretch last season, posting MLB’s best record (43-20) after the break. However, this team hovered around .500 for much of the first half.
I’d make this total closer to 87, suggesting a solid edge on this under.
Kansas City Royals Under 83.5 Wins (-105)
Although this line has dropped from 83.5 to 82.5 since I made this bet, I predict the Royals will finish below their projected win total this season.
The Royals are coming off a remarkable campaign, winning 86 games and reaching the playoffs one year after losing 106 games. Their Pythagorean record (91-71) suggests they were even a bit unlucky.
But it’s worth remembering that Kansas City has only had five winning seasons in the last 30 years. This team made no effort to improve its outfield situation, a position group that is projected to remain one of the worst among all contenders.
The Royals also benefited from tremendous health last year, particularly with their pitching staff. I’d be surprised if that continues after multiple starters pitched a career-high in innings, and the Royals don’t have the depth in the minors to overcome any injuries.
Kansas City could still be competitive in a weak division, but I am skeptical that this team will replicate last year’s performance when everything went right. I’m fading the Royals’ playoff odds in 2025.
