What Is an MLB Run Line?
The run line is baseball’s version of the spread: How many runs will a team win or lose by?
For example, if the Detroit Tigers are -1.5 (+150) favorites against the Chicago Cubs, the Tigers must win the game by at least two runs to cover the run line (in nine innings or extra innings). The accompanying odds — in this case +150 — determine the payout if they cover. Alternatively, the Cubs +1.5 (-120) must lose the game by only one run (or win the game).

The margin of victory doesn’t matter in MLB moneyline betting. If the Philadelphia Phillies are -135 moneyline favorites to beat the Boston Red Sox, the Phillies must win the game. It doesn’t matter if they win by one run, two runs, or 10 runs in nine innings or extra innings. And like the run line, the odds determine the potential payout.
What Is the Total in MLB Betting?
How many total runs will be scored by both teams in the game?
The outcome of the game doesn’t matter when betting on over/under totals. If the total for a Baltimore Orioles-Cleveland Guardians game is 8.5 (-110), the teams must combine for at least nine runs (in nine innings or extra innings) to hit the Over. Alternatively, they must combine for eight or fewer runs to hit the Under.
