Alex Bregman Next Team: Tigers, Red Sox Compete for Veteran 3B

For the second straight offseason, Alex Bregman is a free agent.

Bregman opted out of his deal after one season with the Boston Red Sox. He inked a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox in February, but the contract included an opt-out after each season.

It’s fair to assume that Bregman is seeking a longer contract this winter. Will he stay in Boston or head to a third team in as many years?

Alex Bregman Next Team Odds & Favorites

The BetMGM online sportsbook doesn’t offer MLB odds on Bregman’s next team, but three teams stand out as the best fit to add the veteran infielder:

  • Red Sox
  • Cubs
  • Tigers

The Red Sox are making a reunion with Bregman a priority after a strong first season. Bregman established himself as a clubhouse leader, posting a slash line of .273/.360/.462 with 29 doubles and 62 RBI in 114 games.

The Tigers seemed like a natural fit for Bregman last year, with his old manager (A.J. Hinch) at the helm. They ultimately couldn’t land him, with their six-year, $170 million offer falling short last offseason.

The Cubs also made a four-year, $115 million offer to Bregman last offseason. They remain interested this winter and had a Zoom meeting with Bregman.

Alex Bregman Next Team Prediction

Once again, I’m predicting that Bregman will sign with the Tigers. It just makes too much sense on paper.

Last offseason, I argued that the Tigers’ window to run the American League Central is now. They had posted the best record in baseball from Aug. 11 through the end of the regular season, securing an unlikely playoff berth. They could have established themselves as the division favorites by making a major offensive splash.

Despite not signing Bregman, Detroit still raced out to a commanding lead in the AL Central before an epic collapse down the stretch. The Tigers squandered the division title to the Cleveland Guardians. Detroit still hasn’t won the AL Central since 2014.

If the Tigers want to maximize their chances in 2026, they need to bring in a reliable bat. Tarik Skubal has won back-to-back Cy Young trophies, but it hasn’t been enough for Detroit to make it past the ALDS. With Skubal’s name being featured in trade rumors, it’s now or never for the Tigers to go for it.

MLB Trade Rumors is projecting that Bregman will sign for six years and $160 million this offseason. That’s within the range the Tigers were willing to go to last year, so I could see Bregman being more on board this time around if his motivation is to get a longer deal.

The Red Sox would love to bring Bregman back, but I’m skeptical they will offer him more than a few years entering his age-32 season. They have too many promising young players in their system.

If that’s the case, the Tigers should have a great chance of landing Bregman this winter.
