Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Erickson Lubin: Prediction

My prediction for this boxing title match is a TKO/KO finish for Ortiz Jr. over Lubin. Although they are both power punchers, I think that Ortiz Jr.’s volume and forward pressure will be the main difference in this fight.

Ortiz Jr. uses his stiff jabs to set up his power punches. He’s not only a headhunter, but also a notorious body puncher who targets the liver and solar plexus of his opponents. He mixes this attack and thrives well in close-distance exchanges.

The main weakness in Ortiz Jr.’s fighting style is that he gets a bit too wild at times, especially when he goes for the finish. On the other hand, Lubin is also an incredible power puncher with a one-punch knockout capability.

His main flaw is that he tends to wait for his opponents to initiate the action before he times a perfect counterpunch. This was his main problem when he fought Sebastian Fundora: Once he gets caught with a solid punch, he won’t be able to throw a counter against opponents on wobbly legs.

Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s Recent Fight Results

Ortiz Jr. was a former multiple-time Golden Gloves winner as an amateur before he made a jump to the professional ranks in July 2016 and made quick work of Julio Rodas with a first-round knockout win.

Following that successful debut, he defeated his next 22 opponents and captured the WBC interim super welterweight title against Serhii Bohachuk in August 2024. Ortiz Jr.’s most recent triumph was against Israil Madrimov, whom he defeated via unanimous decision last February.

Erickson Lubin’s Recent Fight Results

Lubin was also a decorated amateur boxer who won several national and regional tournaments before he transitioned to the paid ranks in November 2013. He even captured the WBC FECARBOX super welterweight title before he earned his shot at a major boxing belt.

In October 2017, Lubin fought Jermell Charlo for the WBC interim super welterweight title, but was knocked out in the opening round. Four years and six wins later, he pitted against Fundora in April 2024 for the WBC interim super welterweight title, but once again, he was handed a ninth-round loss.

Since then, he won his last three fights over Luis Arias, Jesus Alejandro Ramos Jr., and Ardreal Holmes Jr. to secure another chance for the coveted WBC interim super welterweight title. This will be his third attempt to capture the belt.
